The Great Adventure One Tax Campaign
of 1916 thru 1918
James H. Griffes
[Reprinted from the publication, Everyman, of
which
James H. Griffes served as editor during this period]
Everyman was published in Los
Angeles, California from around 1906 thru at least 1918. Editor and
manager James H. Griffes wrote under the pseudonym Luke North.
The material reproduced here involves a period of strong divsion
within the ranks of the movement to implement Henry George's system
of public revenue, by this time referred to in the popular press as
the "Single Tax." The overwhelming majority of
Singletaxers supported a nationwide campaign in the United States to
press for legislation in one or more states to raise all revenue
from the taxation of land values.
The first step in this campaign occured during 1916 in California,
where several hundred thousand Californians voted for the Single
Tax. Although this vote was not sufficient to make the Single Tax
law, the effort to educate the public continued during 1917, and the
issue was again placed on the ballot. In this instance, the number
voting in favor fell significantly. In the October 1917 issue of
Everyman, James H. Griffes detailed the events and
editorialized on the reasons for the failure to gain sufficient
public support.

I had many fine friends in Los
Angeles, ...there was my friend of many years, James Griffes,
better known as Luke North, who wrote beautiful things that did
not pay but were a delight to read, whose devotion dated back to
our youth in Chicago, and who found no day too long and no night
too dreary to work in my behalf. [Clarence Darrow, The Story
of my Life, 1932]
