- 1940 - Book, When Loneliness Comes,
published. From the book:
"He understands, too, that land monopoly has a blighting effect on
the people in civilized society. 'In reviewing history,' he
says, 'we perceive that in the primitive state all land is
comparatively free and afforded by the Creator for the use of
men, to labor and live on. Whereas with the encroachment of
organized civilized people -- the free land is ruthlessly seized
from the native inhabitants and direct ownership claimed by the
invading Government. After this aggrandizement, sabotage occurs,
and all the fertile land and the wate rrights thereof are
parceled out to governmental favorites, who promptly force the
native inhabitants into slavery by demanding tribute for
occupancy thereof.' And he goes on to urge a proper
solution."

"The real unearned income is
that which accrues to an individual without having done anything
which contributes to production. Of the several types of such
income is that which issues from the site value of land. The
recipient of such an income does nothing to earn it; he merely
sits tight while the growth of the community about the land to
which he holds title brings him an unmerited gain. This gain is
at the expense of all true producers, whether they be laborers,
enterprisers or investors in industrial equipment. The taxation
of this gain can do nothing to deprive the community of any
service since the donee is rendering none. The land will be
there for the use of society whether the return from it is taxed
or free. Society creates the value and should secure it by
taxation."

The Insufficiency of Henry George's Theory,
published. Quote:
"This criticism is not intended to be a
gage of battle to Henry George, but a warning to the members of,
and sympathizers with, the United Labor Party. Not only do we
highly esteem the noble qualities of his head and heart; not
only do we warmly recognize the great services he has rendered
to the cause of reform, as well by his splendid refutation of
the hateful Malthusian doctrine, as by his fusion of so many
progressive elements into a political party; but, more
particularly, we consider Henry George the forerunner of
Socialism in these United States, and the entering wedge for our
ideas into American minds. ... This criticism, therefore, will
attempt, in as few words as possible, to prove first, that the
doctrines of George, though to a certain extent truer, are
altogether too narrow and one-sided;"
